Helping you navigate a complex criminal justice system to achieve the best possible result.
Andrew Dawson | Criminal Law Specialist | Dunedin, Otago
The criminal justice process can be complex and confusing, especially for those who have limited experience with it. Making sure you understand the system, your options and the possible outcomes, is crucial.
For nearly 20 years, I have been a criminal defence lawyer and specialised in all areas of criminal law in Dunedin and Otago, including Police and Crown prosecutions, appeals and parole proceedings. I have handled cases in the District Court, High Court, Court of Appeal and before the New Zealand Parole Board.
How I can help
I can provide advice to you during a police investigation (pre-charge) and then act for you if the case goes to court. Many cases can be resolved easily, but some need to go all the way to trial, and I can help you in all instances.
I will take the time to explain complex legal concepts in ways which are easy to understand. My experience allows me to break down legal language so you can understand what's happening and together, we can make the best decision on how to move your case forward.
Communication is key. I will stay in contact with regular updates about your case so you know where you stand, and what's coming next.
Between my own cases, and previously managing a team of eight lawyers, I have been involved in criminal cases of varying lengths, publicity and seriousness. This gives me the expertise and confidence to advise you from start to finish.
Representing you
You can nominate me as your lawyer with Legal Aid on serious charges where the maximum penalty is 14 years imprisonment or more. You can also nominate me to represent you in parole proceedings.
I take cases at all levels through Legal Aid, although it’s important to be aware that for less serious cases, lawyers are assigned by Legal Aid on a rotation basis so you may not get to choose your lawyer.
I can also accept your instructions to act as your barrister as a private paying client on cases at all levels of seriousness. I have approval from the New Zealand Law Society to accept instructions directly from you (meaning often no instructing solicitor is required) and I can discuss fees with you if you wish me to represent you as a private client.
