History of Dawson & Associates

Prior to moving to New Zealand, Peter Dawson established his first law practice (also called Dawson & Associates) in 1996 in Cape Town, South Africa. The practice was a specialised commercial, maritime and marine resources law practice and quickly became the only law practice in Southern Africa solely dedicated to the practice of marine law. Today the practice is called Dawson Edwards & Associates and there is a close association between the two companies.

In 2002 Peter immigrated to New Zealand to establish a maritime department within a Nelson law practice. During this period he had a key role in setting up and developing the Cook Islands Ship Register.

On 1 April 2007 Peter left to start his own practice, Dawson & Associates. On 1 August 2008 the company incorporated to become Dawson & Associates Ltd.

Our Logo

Our logo is a stylised representation of the Green Point Lighthouse in Cape Town - the oldest lighthouse on the South African coastline.

The lighthouse was lit for the first time on the night of 12 April 1824 to act as a beacon warning mariners of the risks on their approach to Cape Town.

Like the lighthouse, we aim to assist our clients in avoiding risk, though the provision of expert legal advice and support.
